Batt Insulation

Batt Insulation

When the word “insulation” comes to mind, we commonly think of thick, fluffy rolls of pink material. These are fiberglass batts. Batts are commonly hailed as a cost-effective method of insulating your building.

Besides offering the usual insulation benefits of energy cost reduction and improved indoor comfort, batt insulation also has fireproofing and soundproofing abilities.

Although batt insulation is commonly cut to fit between standard-sized wall studs and ceiling joists, several measures must be taken to realize the material’s full effectiveness:

  • No gaps should exist between fiberglass batts, or air infiltration and condensation will occur
  • For batts to be most effective, they must not be compressed
  • Batts need a vapour barrier on one side (usually facing the drywall), to control buildup and spread of moisture
    • Most commonly, a barrier sheet is installed over the batts and studs/joists as a whole
    • Vapour barriers need to be placed around piping and electrical infrastructure before batts are installed
  • Building codes require that fiberglass batts are caulked at the trimlines
  • Batts are less effective for insulating cavities; spray foam delivers better
  • results in such spaces
    • When spray foam and batts are used in the same area, a 3-inch overlap is required

Correctly installed, fiberglass batts have a 15 to 20-year useful life.
